How To Use the ToolBook Translation System: Step by Step

These steps describe the procedure for creating a multilingual application using ToolBook Translation System (TTS).

Read the Overview of ToolBook Translation System help topic.

Create your ToolBook application for one language or "source" as you normally would.

When you've completed your content*, copy the TTS Setup button from the ToolBook Connection System catalog onto the first page of your application book.

Right click on the setup button, access its extended properties and set the TTS Author Mode to On. This will display the tool palette and add a TTS menu to author level ToolBook.

Use the Setup Sources tool (available from either the TTS menu or the Tool Palette) to setup a source corresponding to the existing content. For example, if you've created your application in English, setup an "English" source.

Use the various ToolBook Translation System "write" tools (including the Batch Tools, the Write Content tools, or the Write Properties tools) to write selected content to the source database.

After writing all content to the database, again use the Setup Sources window to setup a source for each additional language. IMPORTANT: When you select a database for each additional source (in the Setup Sources window), choose to Duplicate your existing database (the one that already has your existing content in it).

After defining additional sources, use the ToolBook Translation System Translator application to translate the content for each new source.

If you intend to let your users swap sources at runtime, make sure you select "From Database" in the Runtime Read options. Then copy a Change TTS Source button from the ToolBook Translation System catalog category into your application to let your users change content.

Use the Prepare for Runtime option on the TTS menu to prepare your application for runtime.

If you plan to let users swap content at runtime, include all necessary files with your installation. See Distributing Your Application for details.

* The most efficient procedure is to complete your application entirely, in one language, before creating additional sources and translating them. However if you need to add objects later, see Adding Objects After Translation.
