How To Use Hotword Connection: Step by Step

These steps describe the procedure for creating a multi-source application (typically multilingual) using Hotword Connection. If you plan to have only one source, skip steps 7 through 9.

Read the Overview of Hotword Connection help topic.

Create your ToolBook application for one language or "source" as you normally would. Create any hotwords you choose. Depending on whether you store hotword names or text, you may want to name your hotwords uniquely. Hotwords sharing the same definition can have the same name (though they do not need to).

When you've completed your content, copy the TB Connection Setup button from the TB Connection catalog onto the first page of your application book.

Right click on the setup button to access its extended properties and set the TBC Author Mode to true. This will display the tool palette and add a Connection menu to author level ToolBook.

Use the Setup Sources tool (available from either the Connection menu or the tool palette) to setup a source corresponding to the existing content. For example, if you've created your application in English, setup an "English" source.

Use the various Hotword Connection tools to write all hotwords to the source database, then add definitions and assign them to the hotwords.

After writing all hotwords and definitions to the database, again use the Setup Sources window to setup a source for each additional language you will want. IMPORTANT: When you select a database for each additional source (in the Setup Sources window), choose to Duplicate your existing database (the one that already has your existing content in it).

After defining additional sources, use the Hotword Connection Translator application to translate the content for each new source.

If you intend to let your users swap sources at runtime, make sure you select either "From Database" or "From Properties" in the Runtime Read options. Then copy a Change Source button from the TB Connection catalog into your application to let your users change content. If you want to provide a glossary, also copy in a "Glossary" button.

Use the Prepare for Runtime option on the Connection menu to prepare your application for runtime.

If you plan to use Hotword Connection at runtime, include all necessary files with your installation. See Distributing Your Application for details.
